The transition from care by the family to a nursing home is not only difficult for the family member, but for all members of the family. Outpatient care might be a little easier for the patient to embrace but regardless, family members often sacrifice what’s best for the whole family for “keeping the parent home longer.” Primary caretakers often forfeit their own well-being. While the possibilities of accidents increase, guilt and resentment builds, and the whole family unit is taxed both physically and emotionally. When the time comes, it’s time for a family discussion.

Don’t push the decision. Present this new option in a positive light discussing all the social, physical and emotional benefits of the new situation. Also, ask your family doctor to back you up in your choice, to help your family member see all the great benefits, like:

  • The chance to maintain some autonomy and dignity
  • The opportunity to still live with the family and remain a contributing member of the family
  • Remaining socially interactive with people the same age
  • Fun, stimulating, age-appropriate activities
  • Various helpful therapies in a non-medical setting

When it’s time, schedule a visit while activities are going on, then do it again, and maybe again. Repeated visits will increase everyone’s comfort levels and make the transition easier.
