Courtesy and respect, that’s what it comes down to. We all need indoor and outdoor space, we all need comfort, we all need activities to occupy our days. A good, quality daycare facility provides all of this and more.

Here are a few things to look for:

  • Rooms that are clean and well-lit
  • Round trip transportation
  • Clean facilities for bathing and hair washing
  • Licensing for administering medicine and medical procedures
  • Professional qualifications of staff
  • Schedule of activities like trips, arts and crafts and other fun stuff
  • Nutritional meals prepared on site or by a qualified outside source
  • Menus that meet the needs of seniors
  • The ability to respond quickly to changing needs
  • Furnishings that allow the residents to roam around easily

Here are a few questions to ask:

  • Is there an age requirement?
  • Are meals served and will your loved one like the style of food they serve?
  • Is the staff qualified to monitor people’s health and what is the plan when a patient falls ill?
  • Are the caregivers fingerprinted, licensed and their safety courses up to date?
  • What is the ratio of staff to seniors?
  • Are there additional fees and staff coverage for Alzheimer’s, MS and Parkinson’s patients?
  • What are the fees? Is it figured hourly or daily? Are there considerations for full-time clients?
  • What types of personal things will you need to supply – pill cases, pillows, blankets, change of clothes?
  • Are family members allowed to visit or be involved in the daily life?

It’s also good to check up on the facilities you are thinking about. Get the facility’s license number and call the San Francisco Department of Human Services at (415) 577-5000, or the California Senior Care Licensing Office at (650) 266-8800. This is a big decision – make sure you get the facts.
